About the author

My whole purpose is to promote understanding of the nature of childhood to parents and teachers and everyone concerned with the well-being of young children.

To this end I have been teaching in primary schools, educating teacher-trainees in early childhood education, giving workshops, speaking at conferences world-wide and publishing a series of books on the subject.

My academic qualifications are as follows: an honours degree in modern languages from Oxford University, Le Certificate d’Etudes Francaises, a two year course at the Sorbonne, Parks, 2 years course on the Academic Diploma in Social Anthropology from Universty College, London , the Teachers’ Certificate in Education from Whitelands College, London and the Academic Diploma in Education from the Institute of Education, London.

After teaching in various schools in rural and urban areas, including the City of London School or Girls, I was responsible for Multi-Cultural and Early Childhood Education at the Teacher-Training Department of the then Polytechnic of North London, now the Metropolitan University.

I have published the following books: ‘Changing Schools’, ‘Minus Eleven Plus’, ‘Family Viewing’, ‘Let’s Co-operate’, ‘Let’s Play Together’, ‘Let’s Enjoy Nature’, ‘Windows to Nature’, ‘Natural Childhood’, ‘Freedom from Bullying’, ‘Positive Childhood: Educating Young Citizens’ and ‘Carrier’s Cart to Oxford: Growing up in the 1920’s in the Oxfordshire Village of Elsfield’.  These are all easy to read and besides giving practical support, contain plenty of ideas for activities with children.   Full details of those in print are given later.

I am at present engaged in writing a book entitled ‘Recapturing Childhood, Positive Parenting’, with the aim of supporting parents and teachers of young children in their practice of giving the children the full benefits of a natural and fulfilling childhood in spite of the over-whelming pressures of the consumer society.  This book will be largely based on the actual experience of parents and educators and there is at present a groundswell of people who are determined to give the children in their care their true inheritance of a fulfilled and creative childhood.

I was fortunate to have that kind of childhood and I must say that the best thing that ever happened to me was to have my own family.  I have two daughters and two grandchildren.
